Careers in Transformation and Change

Variety. Challenge. Development. We will help you succeed.

At BDO we value each other as individuals, and we work together to achieve our personal and professional ambitions. You have a voice and your opinion counts. You are encouraged to shape your career according to your strengths, skills, and personality. You will be challenged and supported in equal measure.

We asked our Senior Associate, Sarah Webster, about her first 6 months in Transformation and Change, here is what she had to say:

We also asked some of the members of our Transformation and Change team what is like to work for BDO and what they get up to in their line of Advisory services.

If you are interested in a career as a Transformation and Change consultant please get in touch with Jordan, Adam, or Tanya or visit our careers page and submit your CV.

What attracted you to a career in consultancy?

Adam Vibert, Assistant Manager: I was initially attracted by the diversity of the role. We get the opportunity to work with companies large and small across different sectors, on a wide range of engagements. Most of the time we are working on projects that bring about change or solve a specific problem, which allows us to contribute to positive and lasting improvements within businesses, and this also appealed to me.

Tanya Grove, Manager: Choosing a career in consultancy opens your world to gain skills and experiences across multiple sectors and being part of diverse team. Although I work in Risk Advisory, I will often be working on the same clients as the Transformation and Change Team and get to share knowledge and bring different skills to the table.

Jordan Egerton, Assistant Manager: The role requires you to work closely with different people across the organisation of the client you are working with. Each client you work requires you to work collaboratively with different stakeholders to achieve a different goal, faces different challenges, have different stakeholders to work with. One engagement is never the same as the previous.

What differentiates BDO from other companies, and in particular consultancy firms?

Adam: The breadth of the services we can provide to our clients is unique. For example, an issue may be highlighted during an audit, the Transformation and Change team can help analyse the issue further and plan the implementation of solutions, our technology arm, C5 can provide advice if it needs technological resolution, and our training arm, ALX, can help embed any changes through training. Other consultancy firms do not have this ability in house and would have to go outside their organisation or off island to access these services and skills.

Tanya: BDO is an all-in-one firm meaning we can service clients in all aspects of their business. BDO is a global firm, this enables us to harness the strengths and expertise of other BDO member firms to share knowledge and skills for the benefit of the client.

Jordan: Many consultancy firms put their first available consultants out on the latest client engagement that has come to market. BDO will always strive to align the client needs and your areas of interest or personal development goals. The engagements are challenging enough to ensure you are always pushing yourself, but they are within a specific field or area that you are interested in.

What specifically is the role of a transformation and change management consultant?

Adam: A Transformation and Change consultant acts a ‘champion for change’, and we work collaboratively with our clients to help analyse their needs and implement projects that bring about new benefits. The role is diverse, so no two weeks are the same and we gain exposure to lots of different industries.

Tanya: Most of my time is spent working on client engagements, which could be project managing the implementation of new technology, or perhaps introducing process improvements.  All our work is Director led and so I always feel really supported.  You will also have ample opportunity learn from others and to use your skills internally.

Jordan: Working in collaboration with the client, we are responsible for identifying areas for improvement and working alongside the client to drive the desired outcome. We do a large variety of work and no one consultants ‘day in the role’ is the same. Each team member has different backgrounds, skills and experience are the same. This is what helps make BDO T&C such a strong offering to clients.

What growth opportunities have you had at BDO? How have they pushed you to develop?

Adam: I can work on large and complex projects that have pushed me outside of my comfort zone and enabled me to learn different skills. BDO also ensures that the projects we work on are diverse which allows us to become skilled in different roles related to the change profession (for example, as project manager, business analyst, change manager and workshop facilitator).

Tanya: There are always opportunities in different areas within BDO. I started in Audit but moved to Advisory because I want to explore new challenges and growth opportunities in a different sector. The firm supported my ambition and have supported many other cases of cross departmental switches. BDO uses a firm wide framework called “Achieving My Potential” which supports employees with personal goals delivery, boosts career planning and enhances performance of individuals and teams.

Jordan: I joined BDO with no major qualifications in change or project management, however during the interview process I was able to demonstrate my transferable skills in my previous role.  Since joining, BDO have supported me and my development goals. I now have five different qualifications helping me to become a more rounded consultant. I have been able to apply the skills and knowledge I have gained on these courses in each of my engagements providing a benefit to me and the client.
